Therapy and ADHD: what psychology works on

ADHD — attention deficit hyperactivity disorder — is a neurodevelopmental condition with defined diagnostic criteria. Diagnosis is made by a qualified professional through assessment, never by an internet questionnaire.

What usually brings someone in

In adults the search rarely begins with inattention itself: it begins with accumulation — deadlines, demands, the sense of disproportionate effort to manage what others seem to do without thinking.

Not every difficulty with attention is ADHD, and several other things produce a similar picture. That is what assessment is for.

What support tends to work on

Concrete day-to-day functioning, but also what the person carries from years of being read as lazy or disorganised — which often weighs as much as the symptoms.

Neuropsychological assessment and medication follow their own rules and not every psychologist provides them. Ask the professional directly what they offer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. You can seek support with no diagnosis at all, including to investigate the suspicion.
