Therapy topics

What people bring to therapy. Each page explains what the topic names, without diagnosing the reader — the label is declared by the professional, not assessed by IAURA.

Ansiedade

Anxiety is a normal bodily response to what is anticipated as a threat. It becomes a clinical matter when it appears out of proportion to the situation, persists over time, or starts to interfere with everyday life — sleep, work, relationships.

Depressão

Depression is a clinical condition, not a synonym for sadness. It involves, among other things, persistently low mood or loss of interest over long periods, with effects on sleep, energy, appetite and the capacity to carry on.

Luto

Grief is the process of reorganising life after a loss — of a person, but also of a bond, a role, a plan. It is an expected response, not a disorder, and there is no correct length for it.

Relacionamentos

Relationships come up in therapy both in individual work and with couples or families. The focus is usually what repeats across a person’s relationships — and what they can change on their own side.

Trauma

In psychology, trauma is defined not by the size of the event but by the effect it left: an experience that exceeded the capacity to process it at the time and keeps producing effects afterwards.

Autoestima

Self-esteem is a person’s relationship with the value they assign to themselves. In clinical work it rarely arrives under that name: it arrives as constant self-criticism, difficulty asking for things, fear of taking up space or being seen.

Estresse e burnout

Stress is the organism’s response to a demand; burnout is a state of exhaustion tied specifically to chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, recognised as an occupational phenomenon by the World Health Organization.

Sono

Sleep difficulties come up often in clinical work, almost always entangled with something else: worry, overload, habits, mood. Psychology works on what sustains the insomnia, not on sleep as an isolated symptom.

TDAH

ADHD — attention deficit hyperactivity disorder — is a neurodevelopmental condition with defined diagnostic criteria. Diagnosis is made by a qualified professional through assessment, never by an internet questionnaire.

Autismo

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition involving differences in social communication and restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour and interest. It is a spectrum: support needs vary widely from person to person.

Maternidade e paternidade

Parenthood opens a wide field in clinical work: trying, pregnancy, loss, the postpartum period, adoption, raising children, and one’s relationship with having been a child.

Carreira

Career questions come up often in clinical work — choosing, changing, dissatisfaction, fear of moving, the relationship with money and recognition. The work is not to hand over the right answer, but to make the decision possible.
