Therapy and career: what psychology works on

Career questions come up often in clinical work — choosing, changing, dissatisfaction, fear of moving, the relationship with money and recognition. The work is not to hand over the right answer, but to make the decision possible.

What tends to sit behind it

The doubt is rarely only technical. Family expectation, fear of disappointing, difficulty sustaining a choice without guarantees, and the confusion between personal worth and professional performance all show up.

In transitions, what usually blocks people is not missing information about the market — it is the cost of leaving behind an identity they built.

Where this is not therapy

Career guidance, coaching and career consulting are distinct services with their own aims and rules. Some psychologists offer vocational guidance, which has its own method within psychology. Ask the professional exactly what they are offering.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as coaching?
No. Psychotherapy is the restricted practice of a regulated profession, with a council, a code of ethics and confidentiality. Coaching is not.
